We wake up to less than clement weather conditions-it is raining and outside is a white out.
So our choice is to get off the mountain. Following usual weird Japanese breakfast we hop on the bus down the mountain-limited visibility and hairpin bends make for an interesting journey; we then make a move onto a funicular
and then transfer to a local train to Toyama; a very cute train with all that's missing is a face on the front of the engine.
After many stops we arrive in bustling Toyama, a town famous for its mountain views and its zipper factories.
We lunch at a recommended okonomiyaki joint-we queue outside for an hour for a rather uninspiring stodgy savoury pancake which can at best be described as "filling".
Following a siesta we stroll up to Toyama castle built in the 1950s.
Then it is time for dinner but the choices are bewildering, all with no English menus or signage, so we opt for an izakaya (a cross between a bar and a restaurant)with a chicken logo; what could possibly go wrong. It turns out we have fallen on our feet and we manage to order numerous dishes by pointing at other diner's plates. Dishes include chicken livers and hearts and the best chips(with truffle butter) I have eaten for a long time.
